Diocese of Victoria, Texas Historic Commission discuss Presidio La Bahia partnership
GOLIAD -- The Diocese of Victoria is working on an agreement with the Texas Historic Commission to turn management and operation of the presidio over to the state agency.
Scott McMahon, who works for the Diocese of Victoria as the director of Presidio La Bahia, said the partnership would be a win-win, bringing more resources and expertise to help preserve the fort and enhance the historical interpretation for visitors. The THC would take over the staffing and historical interpretation with more resources through the agency.
The Diocese of Victoria would retain ownership of the presidio and the Our Lady of Loreto Chapel would remain a mission of the Immaculate Conception Parish in Goliad.
McMahon said the only real change visitors might notice is different merchandise, Texas Historical Commission-branded items, in the gift shop.
According to Tony Martinez, the diocese’s CFO, the agreement is not final as the diocese and the state agency are still working out some details of the proposed agreement.
The Presidio La Bahia is preparing for the 36th annual Goliad Massacre Living History event 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 26, and 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday, March 27. Complete details about the reenactment can be found at www.presidiolabahia.org.
